THE FOOD PYRAMID

The Food Pyramid is a guide to eating a daily balanced diet.  As it goes higher, the servings get smaller which indicates that the food is not needed as much or unhealthier than the one below it. If used properly than your diet will be nutrient rich and balanced.

Bread, Cereal, Rice and Pasta Group
This group provides you the carbohydrates. Carbohydrates give you energy although too much consumption may result in weight gain.

Fruit and Vegetable Groups
Fruits and vegetables are full of various vitamins, nutrients and natural sugars and they are very important for the body. Most fruits and vegetable are ‘free’ foods which mean that eating them will not result in weight gain.

 

Meat, Poultry, egg etc. Group
This group is vital for your protein intake. Protein is essential for growth and repair in the body.

Dairy Group
This group provides you with calcium, which is very important for the building and maintenance of healthy bones and teeth.

​

The last group is the group that is to be used sparingly: oils, fatty foods and sweets. These foods are alright as long as you don’t over eat them.
